Shadow
Gallery started in 1991 on the Magna Carta label. They have since been
with InsideOut Music but their four albums released on Magna Carta are
all outstanding pieces of work. This album includes selected songs from
those four albums that the band chose themselves. This is an outstanding
compilation. Of course I am a bit biased because I happen to love this
band’s music. Anyone who is into melodic rock and metal really needs to
listen to this band.
The first two songs are taken from the Tyranny album. Many people will
say this was their greatest record. “Mystery” is a great mid-tempo song
with an outstanding melody. Baker really has a great voice and the
background vocals are very nice. “Ghost Of A Chance” starts out mellow
with some lovely strings and the crystalline voice of Baker slowly
leading to some fast shredding from Wehrkamp all the while retaining
that typical Shadow Gallery melodic sound. “Deeper Than Love”, taken
from Carved In Stone, has great harmony vocals and really rocks. It
would make a great stadium rocker. Some nice dueling synths and guitar
add to the prog metal sound.
“Hope For Us”, from the album Tyranny, starts with lovely piano and the
emotional vocals of Baker makes for a melancholy beginning. Again, the
vocals are outstanding. I know I am sounding repetitive, but this band
can sing like no other I have heard except maybe Queen and that is a
real compliment. “The Crusher”, an instrumental, starts with a killer
heavy metal riff and some nice soloing from Wehrkamp. This is one of the
heaviest songs on the album, with the band really displaying their
musical muscle. “Colors” slows things down with some nice acoustic
guitar and peaceful singing from Baker. This song also boasts awesome
harmony vocals with a chorus that might stick in your head for a long
time. There are six more songs on the album and all are of a high
standard that only few bands can deliver. Shadow Gallery are a class
act. If you are new to the band this would be a good introduction. If
you are like me and have been a fan for some time you might not justify
buying this but it is nice having this selection of songs on one disc.
Besides, true Gallery fans need to complete their collection making this
a worthwhile purchase. Highly recommended.
